SUMMARY:Drinking Water from Private Wells: Risks\, Barriers\, and Environmental Challenges
DESCRIPTION:Steven D. Wilson\, M.S. is a groundwater hydrologist and Head of the Environmental Public Health\, Information and Data Services Section at the Illinois State Water Survey\, University of Illinois. He authored and manages The Private Well Class\, an online self-paced curriculum for private well owners. \nAn estimated 58 million Americans\, 18% of the U.S. population\, rely on private wells for their drinking water source.  Some wells are inadequately constructed because they were built prior to regulations on well construction; some are completed in areas where the surficial geology doesn’t protect them from surface recharge; some are at risk because a changing climate including flooding and sea level rise; and some are at risk because of a lack of owner resources\, knowledge of the risks\, and ability to pay for treatment. Poor drinking water quality is a significant health risk\, both from bacterial contamination\, as well as harmful natural or man-made contaminants.  We all have a role in understanding these risks and helping clients/patients understand how to protect themselves from any waterborne risks. \nA short Q&A will follow the presentation. \nObjectives\nUpon completion of this course\, participants will be able to:\n\nDiscuss the issues most affecting private well risks including construction and geology\nDiscuss the pressing issues today\, like flooding and emerging contaminants that can affect well water quality\nOutline the ways clinicians can inform and support their patients who use private wells

SUMMARY:The Overturning of Chevron Deference: Impacts on Environmental Health Decision Making
DESCRIPTION:The June 28\, 2024\, Supreme Court decision in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo overturning Chevron deference marks a pivotal shift that could reshape environmental regulation as we know it. The longstanding Chevron decision established the principle that federal courts must defer to an agency’s reasonable interpretation of any statute deemed to be ambiguous. With the authority of judges now expanding into the realm of policymaking\, there are far-reaching implications\, several of which are not fully understood. \nIn this webinar\, legal experts will discuss the implications of the overturning of Chevron deference and its profound impact on science\, public health\, and decision-making. The webinar will conclude with a Q&A\, giving you the chance to engage with our speakers and learn more about how to get involved in efforts to promote science that strengthens and safeguards public health. This webinar is hosted in collaboration with the Collaborative for Health & Environment (CHE)\, Earthjustice\, and UCSF’s EaRTH Center.

SUMMARY:Microbiomes of Pregnancy and Infancy: Implications for Child Health Outcomes
DESCRIPTION:ECHO cohort sites have collected longitudinal microbiome samples and data spanning pregnancy through adolescence from a geographically\, socioeconomically\, and ethnically diverse US sample. The power of the ECHO cohort lies in its assessment of exposures in real time with the tracking of health outcomes as they occur throughout the life course. With specimen and data collection continuing in Cycle 2\, ECHO has an incredible opportunity to advance our understanding of the impact of host associated microbiomes on child health outcomes. This talk will present data from ECHO-wide analyses of extant microbiome data as well as discuss the potential of ECHO microbiome data and samples to advance the fields of exposure science\, child health\, and human development. \nSarah Comstock is an Associate Professor in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at Michigan State University. She earned a BS in Biochemistry from the University of Chicago and her PhD in Nutritional Biology from the University of California\, Davis\, where she studied the impact of food components on peanut and tree nut allergenicity. During her post doc at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign\, Dr. Comstock studied the impact of human milk components on gastrointestinal and immune system development using a piglet model.  The overarching goal of her current research program is to determine which exposures build host-associated microbiomes that ensure appropriate child development. Dr. Comstock co-leads the microbiome and human milk ECHO interest groups. Today she will present data from ECHO-wide analyses of extant microbiome data as well as discuss the potential of ECHO microbiome data and samples to advance the fields of exposure science\, child health\, and human development. \nZoomMeeting: https://duke.zoom.us/j/93167123308?pwd=VW5YVEgyNlJnRlV3V29PQWt5NW1Idz09  \nMeeting ID: 931 6712 3308  \nPasscode: ECHO

SUMMARY:Toxic Chemicals and Children Presentation by Leonardo Trasande\, MD\, MPP
DESCRIPTION:This is a hybrid event and registration is Not required. \n\nIn Person:  CHOP’s Hope Auditorium.\nVirtual: Microsoft Teams. Video Conference ID: 117 337 923 4\n\n  \n About Leonardo Trasande\nLeonardo Trasande\, MD\, MPP is an internationally renowned leader in children’s environmental health.  His research focuses on identifying the role of environmental exposures in childhood obesity and cardiovascular risks\, and documenting the economic costs for policy makers of failing to prevent diseases of environmental origin in children proactively.  He also holds appointments in the Wagner School of Public Service and NYU’s College of Global Public Health. \nHe is perhaps best known for a series of studies published in Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology and the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism that document disease costs due to endocrine disrupting chemicals in the US and Europe of $340 billion and €163 billion annually\, respectively. Dr. Trasande leads one of 35 centers across the country as part of the National Institute of Health’s Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes program.  He is leveraging the NYU Children’s Health and Environment Study as well as another birth cohort to examine phthalates\, bisphenols\, organophosphate pesticides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their effects on fetal as well as postnatal growth and early cardiovascular and renal risks.  These two cohorts are part of a larger initiative nationally to identify preventable and environmental factors that influence child health and disease. \nHe is Principal Investigator on numerous other NIH-funded projects. These include a study on prenatal and childhood phthalate and bisphenol exposures in Generation R (a Dutch birth cohort) to examine obesity and cardiovascular risks\, as well as another project studying the effect of these dietary contaminants in children with chronic kidney disease\, with the hypothesis that these exposures create oxidant stress and accelerate disease progression. He is also Principal Investigator for a research project comparing neurodevelopment\, cardiometabolic and respiratory profiles of children exposed in utero to the World Trade Center disaster to a comparison group. H \ne has served as a member of numerous scientific committees and expert panels\, including: the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Executive Committee of the Council for Environmental Health; the Science and Technical Advisory Committee for the World Trade Center Health Program; the National Children’s Study Methodological Review Panel of the National Academy of Sciences; the United Nations Environment Programme Steering Committee on a Global Outlook for Chemicals; and the Board of Scientific Counselors for the National Center for Environmental Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). After receiving his bachelor\, medical and public policy degrees from Harvard\, he completed the Boston Combined Residency in Pediatrics and a legislative fellowship in the Office of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.  Prior to coming to NYU\, he completed fellowship training in environmental pediatrics.  For five years he also was a Lead Investigator in one of the original (Vanguard) locations of the National Children’s Study\, and Deputy Director for the largest (eight location) Study Center spanning a region from upstate New York to central New Jersey.
