SUMMARY:Long-term Health Effects of Childhood Glyphosate Exposure
DESCRIPTION:Rates of youth liver disease and metabolic disorders have increased dramatically in recent decades. Dr. Brenda Eskenazi will present the results of a long-term study examining possible links between glyphosate exposure and liver disease and metabolic disorders. Glyphosate is the most widely-used broad-spectrum herbicide in the world. \nThe researchers followed 480 mother-child pairs from pregnancy through age 18. They also gathered additional data through a nested case-control study\, in which they examined 60 young adults with elevated levels of certain liver enzymes and compared them with 91 young adults with normal levels of those enzymes. \nThe mother-child pairs were enrolled and studied through the Center for the Health Assessment of Mothers and Children of Salinas (CHAMACOS). This study focused on primarily farmworker families in the Salinas Valley\, California\, and children born between 2000 and 2002. \nThe researchers measured urinary levels of glyphosate and a breakdown product of glyphosate\, AMPA. Urine samples were collected during pregnancy and when the children reached the ages of 5\, 14\, and 18. The researchers also estimated the amount of glyphosate applied within a one-kilometer radius around each home from pregnancy through age 5\, using pesticide application data reported to the state of California. When the children reached the age of 18\, the researchers measured liver enzyme levels and markers of metabolic syndrome. \nUrinary markers of glyphosate and AMPA exposure in childhood were associated with elevated liver enzymes and elevated risk of metabolic syndrome. Living near agricultural glyphosate applications between birth and age 5 was also associated with metabolic syndrome at age 18. The researchers conclude that childhood glyphosate exposure may increase risk of liver and metabolic disorders in young adults. \nThis webinar will be moderated by Sarah Howard of the Healthy Environment and Endocrine Disruptor Strategies (HEEDS) program of Environmental Health Sciences. \nFeatured Speaker\nBrenda Eskenazi\, PhD directs the Center for Environmental Research and Community Health (CERCH\, cerch.berkeley.edu) at the School of Public Health\, University of California at Berkeley. She is the Distinguished Jennifer and Brian Maxwell Professor Emeritus of Maternal and Child Health and Epidemiology. Dr. Eskenazi is a neuropsychologist and epidemiologist whose long-standing research interest has been the effects of the environmental factors on human reproduction (both male and female) and child development. Her work has included the potential health effects of numerous toxicants on a wide spectrum of child health outcomes. Her work has a community-based participatory research focus\, and she has been instrumental in illustrating the health conditions of farmworker families through the long-standing CHAMACOS project. Professor Eskenazi was awarded the prestigious John R. Goldsmith award from the International Society of Environmental Epidemiology for lifetime achievement in environmental epidemiology. \n

SUMMARY:PFAS: Looking Foward: NASEM Recommendations to Improve Public Health
DESCRIPTION:The NASEM report’s recommendations that include public health surveillance\, as well as the critical need to educate health providers on environmental exposures and associated health effects will be discussed. \nDr. Laura Anderko is an environmental health nurse consultant and co-director of the Federal Region 3 Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit (PEHSU) of Mid-Atlantic Center for Children’s Health and the Environment at the M. Louise Fitzpatrick College of Nursing\, Villanova University. She has consulted with health providers and communities about potential health effects and risk reduction strategies for PFAS. She was a co-author for the recent National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) report\, Guidance on PFAS Exposure\, Testing\, and Clinical Follow-up (2022) \nECHO PFAS Series \nThis series is based on Project ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) strategies. It is an innovative tele-mentoring program designed to create virtual communities of learners by bringing together healthcare providers and subject matter experts using videoconference technology\, brief lecture presentations\, and case-based learning\, fostering an “all learn\, all teach” approach. \nParticipants are engaged in the bi-directional virtual knowledge network by sharing clinical challenges and learning from experts and peers. \nDuring an ECHO session\, participants present real (anonymized) cases to the specialists—and each other—for discussion and recommendations. Participants learn from one another\, as knowledge is tested and refined through a local lens. \nEach participant will earn one CE for attending each session. There is no cost for participating in any of the sessions.

SUMMARY:Climate Justice and Children's Health: Inspiring Youth to Advocate for Climate Action
DESCRIPTION:Climate change disproportionately affects the physical and mental health of children\, especially those from low-income families and communities of color. Youth have a powerful voice to advocate for climate action\, but most schools do not educate students on these topics. \nPublic health professionals are uniquely qualified to fill the gap in educating youth about the health impacts of climate change and engaging them in advocating for climate justice in their communities.  Learn more \nIn this webinar\, we will: \n\nExplain the disparities in how climate change affects children’s health.\nIllustrate the role health professionals can play in educating youth.\nDescribe an educational tool for youth.\nFeature youth leaders working on climate action.\nShare the new “Climate and Health Youth Education Toolkit.”

SUMMARY:Climate Change\, Disruption\, and Health Equity
DESCRIPTION:As climate-related disasters\, such as floods\, droughts\, and extreme temperatures become more common\, humans are being exposed to unique combinations of health hazards and stressors\, which are often inequitably distributed across the population. A panel of experts will discuss how climate change and climate disasters impact health outcomes for different populations and exacerbates health inequities\, their impact on health systems\, and how we can better prepare for and mitigate the health impacts of a changing climate. \nCo-sponsored with the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy and part of Energy Week at Penn. \nSupported by the Charles C. Leighton\, MD Memorial Lecture Fund.

SUMMARY:Deadline: Environmental Innovations Initiative Call for Proposals
DESCRIPTION:Funding opportunity for the University of Pennsylvania community only\nA Research Community consists of an interdisciplinary group engaged in studying a common theme of broad environmental significance in one of three defined tracks: Stewardship of Nature\, Climate Action\, and Societal Resilience. Each one must include at least one public-facing outcome and offer opportunities for students to get involved. The call for proposals for AY 23-24 opens on February 14 and closes on March 15. Up to four communities will be awarded up to $25\,000 in April. \nThe tracks defined for this opportunity are listed below\, including a list of key concepts associated with each track. \n\nStewardship of Nature: preservation\, restoration\, valuation\, habitat\, biodiversity\, ecology\, nature-based solutions\nClimate Action: decarbonization\, mitigation\, adaptation\, sequestration\, migration\, science-based targets\nSocietal Resilience: human vitality (health\, wellness\, justice)\, ecological health\, economic prosperity\, responsible consumption (extraction\, production\, pollution\, disposal)\, disruption preparedness\n\nApplications must be faculty-led and multidisciplinary. There must be a clear role for students\, and staff members and external partners may also be included. This is a one-year opportunity with the possibility of renewal for up to three years.  Successful applications will engage multiple disciplines and have cultural\, social\, and political dimensions that open up the possibility for on-going interdisciplinary engagement. The scope of impact can range from local to global. \nRead more
