SUMMARY:The Chemical Footprint of a Plastic Bottle
DESCRIPTION:The global beverage industry buys more than 500 billion plastic bottles every year to package its products. An upcoming report — to be released on May 23 — will document the harmful impacts of plastic bottles on human health\, environmental justice\, and climate change. \nHidden Hazards: The Chemical Footprint of a Plastic Bottle explores the many health harms of plastics production\, the potential health effects of consuming beverages in plastic bottles\, and dangers to workers and communities from recycling and disposal. \nDefend Our Health’s Executive Director Mike Belliveau will present highlights of the report\, including evidence that the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic used in beverage containers pollutes air\, water\, and food with cancer-causing chemicals. One of the report’s co-authors\, Belliveau will also review findings that exposures to these chemicals falls disproportionately on communities of color and low-income people\, largely in the Gulf Coast and Southeast US. Based on their findings\, the authors of Hidden Hazards urge all beverage companies to take immediate action to achieve zero discharge of cancer-causing chemicals along the PET supply chain\, and end the use of virgin fossil-based PET plastic by 2040 to help solve the climate crisis.

SUMMARY:Environmental Chemicals and Children's Health Continuing Medical Education
DESCRIPTION:Children are exposed to environmental chemicals every day that are linked to negative health outcomes including obesity\, diabetes\, and neurocognitive disorders. Although there is extensive evidence that these chemicals are hazardous\, clinical teaching and practice has changed little to reflect this advance in scientific understanding. This continuing medical education course aims to translate current children’s environmental health research on chemicals of concern into clinical practice by a) describing key chemicals of concern including bisphenols\, phthalates\, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)\, b) detailing their health impacts\, and c) educating clinicians on how they can advise patients on reducing their exposure and when additional clinical care may be required. This hybrid course will consist of four modules\, three lectures\, and one Q&A session\, and last approximately four hours. \n

SUMMARY:Long-term Health Effects of Childhood Glyphosate Exposure
DESCRIPTION:Rates of youth liver disease and metabolic disorders have increased dramatically in recent decades. Dr. Brenda Eskenazi will present the results of a long-term study examining possible links between glyphosate exposure and liver disease and metabolic disorders. Glyphosate is the most widely-used broad-spectrum herbicide in the world. \nThe researchers followed 480 mother-child pairs from pregnancy through age 18. They also gathered additional data through a nested case-control study\, in which they examined 60 young adults with elevated levels of certain liver enzymes and compared them with 91 young adults with normal levels of those enzymes. \nThe mother-child pairs were enrolled and studied through the Center for the Health Assessment of Mothers and Children of Salinas (CHAMACOS). This study focused on primarily farmworker families in the Salinas Valley\, California\, and children born between 2000 and 2002. \nThe researchers measured urinary levels of glyphosate and a breakdown product of glyphosate\, AMPA. Urine samples were collected during pregnancy and when the children reached the ages of 5\, 14\, and 18. The researchers also estimated the amount of glyphosate applied within a one-kilometer radius around each home from pregnancy through age 5\, using pesticide application data reported to the state of California. When the children reached the age of 18\, the researchers measured liver enzyme levels and markers of metabolic syndrome. \nUrinary markers of glyphosate and AMPA exposure in childhood were associated with elevated liver enzymes and elevated risk of metabolic syndrome. Living near agricultural glyphosate applications between birth and age 5 was also associated with metabolic syndrome at age 18. The researchers conclude that childhood glyphosate exposure may increase risk of liver and metabolic disorders in young adults. \nThis webinar will be moderated by Sarah Howard of the Healthy Environment and Endocrine Disruptor Strategies (HEEDS) program of Environmental Health Sciences. \nFeatured Speaker\nBrenda Eskenazi\, PhD directs the Center for Environmental Research and Community Health (CERCH\, cerch.berkeley.edu) at the School of Public Health\, University of California at Berkeley. She is the Distinguished Jennifer and Brian Maxwell Professor Emeritus of Maternal and Child Health and Epidemiology. Dr. Eskenazi is a neuropsychologist and epidemiologist whose long-standing research interest has been the effects of the environmental factors on human reproduction (both male and female) and child development. Her work has included the potential health effects of numerous toxicants on a wide spectrum of child health outcomes. Her work has a community-based participatory research focus\, and she has been instrumental in illustrating the health conditions of farmworker families through the long-standing CHAMACOS project. Professor Eskenazi was awarded the prestigious John R. Goldsmith award from the International Society of Environmental Epidemiology for lifetime achievement in environmental epidemiology. \n

SUMMARY:PFAS: Looking Foward: NASEM Recommendations to Improve Public Health
DESCRIPTION:The NASEM report’s recommendations that include public health surveillance\, as well as the critical need to educate health providers on environmental exposures and associated health effects will be discussed. \nDr. Laura Anderko is an environmental health nurse consultant and co-director of the Federal Region 3 Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit (PEHSU) of Mid-Atlantic Center for Children’s Health and the Environment at the M. Louise Fitzpatrick College of Nursing\, Villanova University. She has consulted with health providers and communities about potential health effects and risk reduction strategies for PFAS. She was a co-author for the recent National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) report\, Guidance on PFAS Exposure\, Testing\, and Clinical Follow-up (2022) \nECHO PFAS Series \nThis series is based on Project ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) strategies. It is an innovative tele-mentoring program designed to create virtual communities of learners by bringing together healthcare providers and subject matter experts using videoconference technology\, brief lecture presentations\, and case-based learning\, fostering an “all learn\, all teach” approach. \nParticipants are engaged in the bi-directional virtual knowledge network by sharing clinical challenges and learning from experts and peers. \nDuring an ECHO session\, participants present real (anonymized) cases to the specialists—and each other—for discussion and recommendations. Participants learn from one another\, as knowledge is tested and refined through a local lens. \nEach participant will earn one CE for attending each session. There is no cost for participating in any of the sessions.
