SUMMARY:Deadline to Apply: City of Philadelphia Community Resilience & Environmental Justice Fund
DESCRIPTION:The Office of Sustainability is excited to announce the release of the Community Resilience & Environmental Justice Fund. The application is available through the Philadelphia City Fund’s website.  \nThis Fund will support community groups working to ensure that all Philadelphia residents have a livable community\, free of environmental toxins and hazards. This means:  \n\nClean air\, land\, and water\nHealthy\, fresh\, and culturally appropriate foods \nHomes\, jobs\, and neighborhoods free from pollutants and toxins\nCommunities that are resilient to the impacts of climate change\, such as flooding and extreme heat \n\nThis Fund comes from a recognition of the need to invest in the grassroot activism that residents living on the frontlines of environmental harm engage in every day. As such\, this fund is dedicated to resourcing frontline communities experiencing environmental injustice to advance their vision of an equitable and resilient future. The grant fund is steered by the Philadelphia Environmental Justice Advisory Commission and supported by the Office of Sustainability and William Penn Foundation.  \nThe Fund will provide $10\,000 grants to 15 organizations and projects working towards long-term environmental justice in Philadelphia. These funds must be used within 12 months of being awarded.   \nLearn more.

SUMMARY:Closing the Exposure Assessment Gap: A Case Study of Phthalates
DESCRIPTION:In this webinar\, Dr. Bhavna Shamasunder will explain the problems with current approaches to exposure assessment\, and will describe ways in which EPA could improve its approach in the short term. She will present the example of phthalates as a case study of the patchwork regulatory environment\, the ways in which incomplete exposure assessments contribute to the problem\, and the options for improving EPA’s approach. Her discussion of exposure assessment will draw upon and build on a recent study\, Addressing Systemic Problems with Exposure Assessments to Protect the Public’s Health. Dr. Shamasunder and Dr. Astrid Williams will discuss racial disparities in exposures to phthalates and implications for health\, drawing upon the findings of the Taking Stock study on impacts of beauty products on Black and Latina women’s health. \nThe webinar will be moderated by Jonathan Kalmuss-Katz of Earthjustice\, who will place the discussion in a framework of on-going work to address the cumulative risk of phthalates and other chemicals of high concern under the Toxic Substances Control Act. He will also discuss implications for environmental justice activities at EPA\, and will highlight opportunities to take action on this issue. \nThis webinar is cosponsored by CHE and the Program on Reproductive Health and the Environment (PRHE)’s Science Action Network.

SUMMARY:East Palestine 6 Months After
DESCRIPTION:This virtual symposium will examine how life has changed for the people of East Palestine and nearby communities six months following the catastrophic train derailment; review the available science\, what we still don’t know\, and what is needed to bridge the gap; examine policy options to prevention future disasters\, ensure that polluters are held responsible\, and protect communities and workers; and develop plans for coordinated action. Participants will break into subgroups to identify action steps and priorities to support impacted communities and reduce the likelihood of similar events in the future.

SUMMARY:Unequal Treatment Revisited: A Workshop Series
DESCRIPTION:The first workshop of a virtual series hosted by the National Academies’ ad hoc Committee on Unequal Treatment Revisited will examine major developments over the past two decades that have contributed to the current state of racial and ethnic health care inequities; discuss the impact of such inequities among patients\, families\, and communities; assess the roles of clinicians and health care leaders in contributing to or mitigating the inequities in health care; and explore what could be done differently in communities to advance health care equity. This workshop series is part of a consensus study that will identify major drivers of health care disparities\, gaps in the evidence base\, effective interventions\, and more. This work builds on the 2003 Institute of Medicine consensus report\, “Unequal Treatment: Confronting Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health Care.”

SUMMARY:Environmental Justice and Climate Protection Conference
DESCRIPTION:Our second annual Environmental Justice and Climate Protection Conference brings together community leaders\, concerned citizens\, elected officials\, academics\, and industry experts. Together we will break information silos through information sharing focused on identifying solutions to heal and improve the environmental health of all Georgians. \nConference Charge: What can be done *right now* to work with communities to move the needle on addressing environmental impacts on health? How can we measure success so that these immediate actions are sustained? \nTo spur people to action – CHARTER will set aside funding\, specifically for partnerships formed during this conference\, to explore pilot ideas related to Maternal/Child Environmental Health.

SUMMARY:The Chemical Footprint of a Plastic Bottle
DESCRIPTION:The global beverage industry buys more than 500 billion plastic bottles every year to package its products. An upcoming report — to be released on May 23 — will document the harmful impacts of plastic bottles on human health\, environmental justice\, and climate change. \nHidden Hazards: The Chemical Footprint of a Plastic Bottle explores the many health harms of plastics production\, the potential health effects of consuming beverages in plastic bottles\, and dangers to workers and communities from recycling and disposal. \nDefend Our Health’s Executive Director Mike Belliveau will present highlights of the report\, including evidence that the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic used in beverage containers pollutes air\, water\, and food with cancer-causing chemicals. One of the report’s co-authors\, Belliveau will also review findings that exposures to these chemicals falls disproportionately on communities of color and low-income people\, largely in the Gulf Coast and Southeast US. Based on their findings\, the authors of Hidden Hazards urge all beverage companies to take immediate action to achieve zero discharge of cancer-causing chemicals along the PET supply chain\, and end the use of virgin fossil-based PET plastic by 2040 to help solve the climate crisis.

SUMMARY:Environmental Chemicals and Children's Health Continuing Medical Education
DESCRIPTION:Children are exposed to environmental chemicals every day that are linked to negative health outcomes including obesity\, diabetes\, and neurocognitive disorders. Although there is extensive evidence that these chemicals are hazardous\, clinical teaching and practice has changed little to reflect this advance in scientific understanding. This continuing medical education course aims to translate current children’s environmental health research on chemicals of concern into clinical practice by a) describing key chemicals of concern including bisphenols\, phthalates\, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)\, b) detailing their health impacts\, and c) educating clinicians on how they can advise patients on reducing their exposure and when additional clinical care may be required. This hybrid course will consist of four modules\, three lectures\, and one Q&A session\, and last approximately four hours. \n

SUMMARY:World Asthma Day
DESCRIPTION:World Asthma Day (WAD) (May 2\, 2023) is organized by the Global Initiative for Asthma\, (GINA)\, a World Health Organization collaborative organization founded in 1993.  WAD is held each May to raise awareness of Asthma worldwide. \nGINA has chosen “Asthma care for All” as the theme for the 2023 World Asthma Day. \nThe majority of the burden of asthma morbidity and mortality occurs in low and middle income countries. GINA strives to reduce this burden by encouraging health care leaders to ensure availability of and access to effective\, quality-assured medications. The Asthma care for All message promotes the development and implementation of effective asthma management programs in all resource countries. \nGINA aims to increase and strengthen the link with local and national guideline makers.   GINA also commits to ensure specific recommendations for environmental sustainability by sharing concerns about planetary health with a high priority on patient safety.  GINA is working to improve the lives of people with asthma globally\, and multi-faceted collaboration for improvement in all aspects of asthma care\, for patients and for the environment is vital.
