SUMMARY:Minding the Climate: How Neuroscience Can Help Solve Our Environmental Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Duhaime has written Minding the Climate: How Neuroscience Can Help Solve Our Environmental Crisis. In her book\, Dr. Duhaime discusses how our decisions and understanding of complex problems like climate change are influenced by neuroscience and the evolution of our brains. Dr. Duhaime will present key points from the book\, followed by a moderated discussion of strategies about how to use these insights. \nThis discussion session will be moderated by PRCCEH Deputy Director Marilyn V. Howarth\, MD\, FCPP. Dr. Howarth is a College Fellow and chairs the Environmental Health Committee of the Section on Public Health and Preventive Medicine. She is faculty at the Center of Excellence in Environmental Toxicology at the Perelman School of Medicine. \nThe discussion will be followed by a question & answer session with those in attendance. After the discussion\, Dr. Duhaime will be available to sign copies of her book. \nAbout Dr. Duhaime\nDr. Duhaime is a senior pediatric neurosurgeon at the Massachusetts General Hospital and is the Nicholas T. Zervas Distinguished Professor of Neurosurgery at Harvard Medical School. Her neuroscience research investigates mechanisms\, pathophysiology\, imaging\, and treatment of injury in the immature brain\, using translational and clinical approaches to study injuries occurring in infants and young children\, including those seen most commonly in child abuse. The work also investigates plasticity\, recovery\, and return of brain function in children and adolescents during maturation. \nDr. Duhaime also has a longstanding interest in the relationship between brain and behavior\, and in environmental issues. She is a Faculty Associate of the Harvard University Center for the Environment. Beginning with a fellowship at the Radcliffe Institute in 2016 she has explored the neurobiology of reward circuitry and plasticity and its relevance to pro-environmental behavior\, and also worked with a diverse team to design a prototype advanced “green” biophilic pediatric hospital. Her book on this work\, Minding the Climate\, was published in 2022 (Harvard University Press). She now serves as Associate Director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Center for the Environment and Health\, supervising the Research pillar\, and as Associate Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Climate Change and Health

SUMMARY:The Not-So-'Micro' Plastic Problem: A Conversation with Matt Simon
DESCRIPTION:For this webinar\, CHE-Alaska will be joined by science journalist Matt Simon\, author of the book A Poison Like No Other: How Microplastics Corrupted Our Planet and Our Bodies. In the book\, Simon reveals a new dimension to the plastic dilemma – how microplastics break down into small enough pieces to enter lungs\, be absorbed by crops\, and infiltrate aquatic animals’ muscle tissues.  Microplastics represent a cocktail of toxicity: plastics can contain as many as 10\,000 different chemicals. These include chemicals that are linked to diseases including cancers\, diabetes\, and other disorders associated with endocrine disruption. \nSimon will also discuss how the microplastic crisis pertains to the Arctic\, which is becoming increasingly contaminated. In a recent article Simon published on Wired\, he writes\, \n“As scientists have shown elsewhere\, the team found that microplastics contamination in the Arctic has been growing exponentially and in lockstep with the growth of plastic production—which is now up to a trillion pounds a year\, with the global amount of plastic waste projected to triple by 2060.” \n  \nRegister through Zoom

SUMMARY:Policy-relevant Epidemiologic Methods for Traffic-related Air Pollution & Infant Health
DESCRIPTION:Determining to what extent regulations produce the promised health benefits is a critical public health goal. For instance\, billions of dollars have been spent implementing regulations to reduce traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) from tailpipe emissions in the United States. However\, few health studies have empirically evaluated the direct impact of TRAP reductions on population health. In this talk\, Dr. Willis will discuss an ongoing accountability study to determine how different aspects of TRAP regulations have yielded improvements to infant health in Texas. \n  \nRegister here: https://nyulangone.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_jFvzwlGDQMe5CZ53I0WMHg#/registration

SUMMARY:Chemicals and Pregnancy Complications: Findings from Nontargeted Analysis
DESCRIPTION:Toxic chemicals are ubiquitous in the environment. Fewer than 1% of the over 40\,000 chemicals imported\, processed\, or used in the U.S. are regularly biomonitored. Still fewer have been evaluated for adverse health outcomes during pregnancy. Chemical exposures during pregnancy have been linked with lifelong consequences for maternal and child health including cardiovascular disease\, diabetes\, adverse infant neurodevelopment\, and reproductive outcomes. These health outcomes are increasing at rates that cannot be fully explained by genetics or improvements in diagnostics. \nNon-targeted analysis (NTA) methods can help us tentatively identify chemicals that are not regularly studied. These chemicals can then be quantified through “targeted” methods\, giving us the ability to evaluate the association with adverse health outcomes. \nDr. Jessica Trowbridge and Dr. Tracey Woodruff will present the findings of their new study\, Extending Nontargeted Discovery of Environmental Chemical Exposures during Pregnancy and Their Association with Pregnancy Complications—A Cross-Sectional Study. This study uses the results of NTA methods to identify nine environmental chemicals in maternal samples and in cord blood\, and their association with adverse pregnancy outcomes. Some of these chemicals were measured in this study for the first time in pregnant people. The study finds chemical exposure is widespread\, including to perfluoroalkyl substances\, abnormal fatty acids used in plastics production\, and solvents used in consumer products\, pesticide production\, and plastics production. Additionally\, PFAS and abnormal fatty acids are associated with increased odds of gestational diabetes mellitus and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. \nThis study demonstrates the power of non-targeted methods to identify and measure environmental chemicals that are not regularly studied. It adds to the evidence that environmental contaminants can have lifelong consequences for pregnancy and health. \n\n

SUMMARY:Vape and Mirrors: Chemical exposure and potential health effects from e-cigarette use
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Angela Aherrera is a K99/R00 postdoctoral research fellow at the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHSPH). She received her bachelor’s in behavioral biology (2011) from Johns Hopkins University and both her master’s (2015) and Doctorate in Public Health (2019) from JHSPH. She also completed a T32 postdoctoral fellowship (2022) at the Pediatric Pulmonary Division of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. \nAs an exposure scientist and environmental epidemiologist\, Dr. Aherrera has a long-term interest in understanding environmental hazards and their impact on health outcomes. Her research interests focus largely on exposure to environmental hazards\, namely tobacco and electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes)\, heavy metals\, aldehydes and microplastics\, and understanding their role in the development and prevention of adverse respiratory health outcomes. In September 2022\, she was awarded the K99/R00 Pathway to Independence by the NIEHS/FDA to investigate the exposure and toxicity of metal and aldehydes\, as well as the pulmonary health effects\, including inflammation\, of using new and emerging electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) devices among young adults. She was also awarded NIOSH pilot funding this year to address the critical knowledge gaps on occupational exposures to microfibers\, a major type of microplastic\, among garment industry workers. \nDr. Aherrera is passionate about reducing inequities in vulnerable and disproportionately exposed populations. She aims to build collaborations and a portfolio of multidisciplinary research that provide policy-relevant environmental epidemiologic evidence for interventions that would ultimately improve general population health. \nAttend via zoom here

SUMMARY:Racism that Upends The Cradle
DESCRIPTION:Historic and persistent inequities compound jeopardy for Black children and other children of color.  From COVID-19 to climate change to economic crises\, Black children experience the trauma of racism even before they are born\, and are confronted throughout their lives by a system designed not to support them. We can build a new future: one that embraces systems that enable us to all share in abundance and thrive together\, supporting all children’s futures.  Join this discussion on children’s environmental health equity and climate justice to hear speakers explore how systemic racism across sectors impacts the health and wellness of Black children and how we can pave a way to racial healing and justice.
