SUMMARY:Impacts of Extreme Heat on Maternal and Child Health: From Awareness to Action
DESCRIPTION:The 9th Annual Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Symposium will explore the research and evidence on the impacts of extreme heat on maternal and child health and discuss ways families\, communities\, and governments can take action. \nKeynote Speaker: Lindsey Burghardt\, MD\, MPH\, FAAP\, Chief Science Officer\, Center on the Developing Child\, Harvard University \nDr. Burghardt develops and leads the Center’s scientific agenda. She is the founding director of the Center’s Early Childhood Scientific Council for Equity and the Environment\, a multidisciplinary group that synthesizes and translates scientific mechanisms related to the how the built and natural environments impact children’s development and lifelong health.\nPanel discussions and presentations will explore the evidence\, review new data tools to identify populations and areas most at risk from extreme heat\, describe innovative strategies\, programs\, and policies\, highlight the experiences of youth and community advocates\, and give space to hearing from current and recent trainees who want to address this issue. \nIn-person Registration: bit.ly/DrexelMCH2024 \nOnline Registration: bit.ly/DrexelMCH2024Online

SUMMARY:State Policy Showcase: Reducing Exposure to Lead in Schools and Child Care Centers’ Drinking Water
DESCRIPTION:No level of lead in drinking water is safe\, especially for growing kids. Alexandra Simon\, Public Health Advocate with CoPIRG\, and Cyndi Roper\, Senior Policy Advocate with Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC)\, will discuss policies in both Colorado and Michigan designed to help protect children from exposure to lead in drinking water at schools and child care facilities. \nAlexandra will dive into Colorado’s 2022 “Clean Water In Schools And Child Care Centers” law\, which requires some schools\, child care centers\, and family child care homes to test for lead in their drinking water and remediate if 5ppb or more is found. Cyndi will focus on Michigan’s landmark 2023 “Filter First” law. The Michigan law establishes that schools and child care facilities must install filters at drinking and cooking water outlets to proactively remove any lead contamination that may exist\, and also test the water for lead after the filters have been installed. You’ll learn about the “nuts and bolts” of these policies\, why these measures help protect children’s health\, and what steps were taken to advocate for these protections.  \nFollowing these case studies\, we’ll open up the discussion for participants to ask questions\, share insights\, discuss barriers and roadblocks\, find windows of opportunity and coalitions to build\, as well as other strategies needed to successfully address lead exposure for children.

SUMMARY:National Healthy Homes Webinar Series: Detection of Asthma Triggers in the Home: Novel Methods for Allergen and Mold Detection
DESCRIPTION:Environmental exposure of asthmatics to allergens in homes results in lost sleep and days of school/work. These exposures differ in each home\, and thus multifactorial allergen mitigation is necessary to improve asthma outcomes. However\, targeted interventions can be challenging due to difficulty in identifying relevant exposures because direct allergen measurement is cumbersome\, time-consuming\, and expensive. The goal of this work is to develop novel smartphone-based systems can allow for rapid\, point-of-care detection of environmental allergens. \nThis webinar will describe improvements in color-based detection\, patient education needs\, and lateral flow assay capabilities that overcome limitations of prior home allergen detection methods. We will also describe our HUD-funded project to develop a smartphone-based system paired with a lateral flow assay to measure common allergens in homes of an asthma homecare program. The color correction algorithm can reduce up to 90% of color variance with images captured under different lighting conditions and performs 200% better than readings from the human eye. A needs assessment in a cohort of parents of pediatric asthma patients revealed interest in allergen mitigation to control their asthma and highlighted the need for allergen education. \nThe second half of the webinar will describe novel insights gained from measuring fungal function indoors that may lead to improvements in mold detection. Overall\, novel allergen detection technologies can empower homecare programs to target limited resources to remediate the most important allergens in the homes of individuals with asthma.

SUMMARY:Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Program and Philadelphia
DESCRIPTION:Sunni Mumford is the Professor of Epidemiology and Co-Director of the Women’s Health Clinical Research Center at the University of Pennsylvania. Sunni is a reproductive and nutritional epidemiologist whose research focuses on the role of modifiable lifestyle and environmental factors across the life course that affect female and male reproductive health\, fertility\, pregnancy and child health outcomes. She is particularly interested in the intersection between diet and environmental exposures during critical windows of development\, and epidemiologic methods to address these pressing questions. \nA multidisciplinary group of researchers from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and Penn Medicine have received a $50 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to study the impact of environmental influences on pregnancy and children’s health. The research program is part of the NIH’s Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Program\, which funds research to uncover how environmental exposures during preconception\, pregnancy and early life affect children’s long-term health. \nZoom Meeting Link.  Meeting ID: 924 0066 1903\n  \nRegister Here\nWe’ll follow up with an ical appointment and send reminders! SUMMARY:Community health impacts of air pollution in the US
DESCRIPTION:Join the Climate Equity Initiative at Clean Air Task Force (CATF) for our sixth report launch\, Community Health Impacts of Air Pollution in the U.S. \nAccording to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences\, air pollution is “a major threat to global health and prosperity. Exposure to air pollution is responsible for a variety of adverse health consequences. For example\, it can lead to damage to respiratory and cardiovascular systems\, premature mortality\, worsened mental health\, impaired neural function\, increased cancer risk\, decreased fertility\, weakened immune systems\, and harm to pregnancies. Air pollution\, in all forms\, is responsible for more than 6.5 million deaths each year globally.” \nDespite the benefits of the Clean Air Act\, many Americans experience unhealthy levels of air pollution in the United States. While the Clean Air Act has significantly reduced air pollution\, there are: \n\nAreas in the U.S. where air pollution exceeds legal limits under the Clean Air Act;\nConsiderations that some of the legal standards should be more stringent; and\nSignificant exposure disparities\, especially related to people of color and low-income communities.\n\nThis report identifies the largest sources of air pollution in the U.S.\, describes the health impacts of air pollution\, and is followed by a summary of air emissions from the energy and transportation sectors. In addition\, the report provides an overview of the Clean Air Act\, including a description of some of its key programs and the pollutants regulated under the act\, and discusses the successes of the Clean Air Act in improving air quality nationwide\, while recognizing that disenfranchised and underserved communities bear a disproportionate share of the continuing burden of air pollution.
