SUMMARY:Plastic\, Chemicals & Infertility: What we know now
DESCRIPTION:Industrial chemicals that can affect male and female reproductive function are widespread in our environment. Many of these chemicals are used in the plastics that we use in our daily lives. We are also exposed through manufacturing processes\, pesticides\, and a range of household products\, from air fresheners to skin creams. \nOver the past few decades\, a growing body of evidence has found that exposure to these chemicals is linked to many health concerns\, such as infertility\, cancer\, and neurodevelopmental disorders. A new documentary\, The Plastic Detox\, unfolds the science behind plastics and their health impacts\, specifically fertility challenges. This documentary was guided by environmental and reproductive epidemiologist\, Dr. Shanna Swan\, who conducted a three-month intervention with couples experiencing infertility to “lower daily exposure to plastic-related chemicals in hopes of better health markers\, and ultimately\, pregnancy.” \nIn this EDC Strategies Partnership webinar\, Dr. Swan will discuss the science behind the movie\, details of the “detox” process the participating couples undertook\, and how to understand the implications of this experiment. She will also share global trends in sperm count\, semen quality\, and fertility\, and explain why scientists are certain that environmental factors are driving the dramatic increases worldwide. Finally\, she will give her perspective on how the global crisis in reproductive health can be addressed through action to reduce or eliminate toxic exposures. The webinar will be moderated by Génon Jensen\, Executive Director\, Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL). \nRegister here

SUMMARY:EDCs & Reproductive Health: Effects of chemical mixtures on ovarian function
DESCRIPTION:Up to 15% of women of reproductive age are infertile\, with ovarian disorders as a leading cause. These disorders include primary ovarian insufficiency\, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)\, anovulation\, and aneuploidy. \nThe underlying mechanisms of ovarian dysfunctions remain largely unknown\, but studies have shown links to exposure to environmental endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) including dioxins\, phthalates\, bisphenols\, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)\, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Most prior research focuses on exposure to a single EDC\, but in the real world people are exposed to complex EDC mixtures. \nIn this EDC Strategies Partnership/Young EDC Scientists Showcase (YESS) webinar\, Dr. Shuo Xiao will introduce his lab research that focuses on integrating in vivo\, in vitro\, and in silico models to study the impacts of real-world EDC mixtures on female ovarian function\, reproductive outcomes\, and the molecular mechanisms involved. \nDr. Xiao is the 2025 winner of the Lou Guillette\, Jr Outstanding Young Investigator Award from Healthy Environment and Endocrine Disruptor Strategies (HEEDS)\, a program of Environmental Health Sciences. This award is given yearly in honor of Dr. Lou Guillette Jr. (1954-2015) to a young investigator who embodies Lou’s love of science\, communication and commitment to mentoring. \nThis webinar will be moderated by Sarah Howard\, Program Manager at HEEDS.

SUMMARY:Environmental Policy and Public Health: Connections and Consequences
DESCRIPTION:Hear the words “environmental policy\,” and many people think of protecting threatened species\, like the spotted owl\, the wolf\, the whales. Or they think of trees and parks and wilderness areas and being able to spend time outdoors. In fact\, the nation’s environmental laws—the Clean Air Act\, the Clean Water Act\, and others—are some of the most powerful tools we have to protect public health. This talk will explore the connection between the laws the US Environmental Protection implements and our health and examine the public health impacts of past and more recent policy decisions.

SUMMARY:The Race to Research: Plastic\, Microplastics\, and Human Health
DESCRIPTION:Megan J. Wolff\, PhD\, MPH\, will deliver dynamic and in-depth lecture on what is known – and what is being researched – about the impacts of plastics on human health. Recent findings about the impacts of plastic on human health demonstrate that plastic pollution is not just a litter problem\, but a health one. As researchers follow the path of microplastics into the ecosystem and into us\, they are coming to understand the hazards that these chemical particles present to living tissue\, and they are raising alarms. Plastic is ubiquitous in our lives\, and there is little way for individuals to avoid exposure. But solutions do exist – and they are within our reach. Come learn about what they are\, and what you can do to bring them about. \n  \nRegister for this Seminar:\n\n\n\n\nAbout Megan \nMegan J. Wolff\, Ph.D.\, MPH is the executive director of P-SNAP\, a network of physicians and scientists who speak\, write\, and testify on plastics and human health. From 2022-2023\, she served on the Minderoo-Monaco Commission on Plastic and Human Health\, which compiled an authoritative report on the health effects of plastic. She was the Health Policy Director at Beyond Plastics from 2021-2024. Wolff is an adjunct faculty member at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University\, and offers an online class on plastics\, microplastics\, and human health. She is a frequent public speaker. \nDr. Wolff received her Masters and her Ph.D. in Public Health from Columbia University\, and her BA in English from Wesleyan University. She lives with her family in New Paltz\, New York.

SUMMARY:Health Risks from Air Pollution: Costs of Relaxing Standards
DESCRIPTION:Professor Joel Schwartz is noted for his work on the acute and chronic health effects of fossil fuel air pollution. One of his collaborative studies revealed that exposure to fine combustion particles in the air at concentrations well below current standards are associated with a range of conditions\, including dementia\, asthma\, heart attacks\, and lung cancer. The study indicated that the death rate from this pollution is almost 1 in 5 deaths worldwide\, about twice the previous mortality estimate.  Research data has shown that the pollution impact falls disproportionately on poorer communities. \nSpeaker: Dr. Joel Schwartz\, Professor of Environmental Epidemiology at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health \nProfessor Schwartz has examined cardiovascular effects of lead exposure in adults\, as well as cognitive\, auditory and growth effects of lead exposure in children\, with gasoline lead as the major source of such exposure in the U.S. His research has examined both acute and chronic exposure effects\, including exposure to fine combustion particles in the air at concentrations well below current standards. Documented health effects ranged from intensified respiratory symptoms in patients\, to higher hospital admissions\, to increased deaths. This research led to the past tightening of the U.S. air quality standards. His work with other researchers on the health effects of ozone exposure has focussed on the cardiovascular effects of air pollution and on factors which modify the body’s response\, with some evidence that diabetics patients are more susceptible.

SUMMARY:Beyond Silos: Why Community Engagement is Vital to Redefining Health\, Environment\, and Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Co-hosted by the U.S. National Academy of Medicine (NAM) and the School of Public Health of the University of Hong Kong (HKU)\, the seminar will feature Dr Nason Tan\, NAM-HKU Fellow in Global Health Leadership for the 2023/24 cohort\, project conducted as part of his global health leadership fellowship. He will discuss authentic and meaningful community engagement\, emphasizing the community as a full partner in advancing public health. \nConfronting complex health threats—from climate impacts to non-communicable diseases—requires a fundamental transformation beyond traditional\, siloed approaches where science\, policy\, and community engagement operate in parallel. This presentation posits that authentic community engagement is the critical catalyst redefining this landscape\, forging integrated solutions that simultaneously advance health\, equity\, and social resilience. We demonstrate how co-production of knowledge\, exemplified by community-led initiatives\, transforms data into actionable evidence and policy change\, while place-based initiatives showcase how community stewardship builds the adaptive social fabric essential for resilience. Moving beyond programmatic outreach to deep partnership not only yields more equitable outcomes but also challenges our institutions to champion new models of scholarship\, funding\, and impact evaluation. We conclude with a call to action for academic institutions to lead this paradigm shift by institutionalizing the principles of community-driven science to foster a more just\, healthy\, and resilient future. \nAbout Dr Nason Tan\nFor Dr Nason Tan\, public health is a calling forged on the front lines. His 20-year journey from treating tropical diseases with Médecins Sans Frontières in Sierra Leone and Ethiopia to his current role at the University of Hong Kong is rooted in a single\, powerful conviction: championing health equity for the most vulnerable. Today\, he channels this frontline experience into grassroots action and academic leadership\, focusing on planetary health\, mental health\, and community-driven solutions to build a more resilient future.

SUMMARY:Beyond Plastics Webinar: Toxic Chemicals in Plastics
DESCRIPTION:You may have heard about microplastics and nanoplastics infiltrating the human body. Maybe you saw a news article about how there’s roughly the equivalent of a plastic spoon’s worth of micro and nano-plastics in our brains or a headline about microplastics in the human placenta\, breast milk\, or testicles. Few people realize that plastics are made with chemicals – a lot of them! There are more than sixteen thousand known chemicals added to plastics to give them various qualities – shiny\, matte\, flexible\, hard\, heat resistant\, etc. Unfortunately\, more than a quarter of these chemicals are known to be toxic. \nPlease join Beyond Plastics\, and Ami Zota\, ScD of Columbia University and Ryan Babadi\, PhD of Toxic-Free Future for a free educational webinar about the toxic chemicals in plastics. Learn which toxic chemicals are used in plastics that are commonly used to make children’s toys\, dishes and kitchenware\, clothing\, food and beverage packaging\, building materials\, cosmetics\, personal care products\, and more. We’ll also discuss the negative impacts of these chemicals on our health and environment as well as how you can help protect yourself and your community from them. Register now to save your spot for our November 12 webinar.
