SUMMARY:Reporting on Toxics & Health: Lessons from covering “forever chemicals”
DESCRIPTION:Accurate reporting on chemicals and health is more important than ever before. While science clearly links chemical exposures to many health harms\, this issue has become increasingly politicized. Petrochemical corporations often fuel the confusion and proactively manufacture doubt about the science. \nIn this webinar\, award-winning chemical pollution reporters Sharon Lerner of ProPublica and Stéphane Horel of Le Monde will discuss the importance of accurate local reporting on toxic chemicals. Focusing on PFAS “forever chemicals” as an example\, the speakers will explore the critical role of journalists in covering chemical health hazards\, public decision-making\, and industry strategies to influence both policy and science. \nRegister here \n

SUMMARY:What’s in our water? A participatory science toolkit and behavioral intervention to reduce health risks of chronic microplastic exposure
DESCRIPTION:Samantha McBride\, PhD\, is a recipient of a pilot award from PRCCEH to create a participatory science toolkit for microplastics analysis and behavioral intervention to reduce health risks of chronic microplastic exposure in students. Dr. McBride and her research team aim to distribute microplastics detection kits and perform outreach activities educating older children on microplastics science at local middle and high school programs with the goal of reducing chronic consumption of water from single use plastic bottles. In this seminar she and Derek Ho\, PhD\, will present their work and discuss their outreach activities. \nFollowing registration below\, a Zoom link will be emailed for the webinar. \nSamantha McBride is an assistant professor of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics at the University of Pennsylvania\, with a secondary appointment in Chemical and Biological Engineering. She is the principal investigator of the McBride Lab at the School of Engineering and Applied Science. Her research leverages the latest advancements in interfacial science\, fluid physics\, and soft matter physics for water and sustainability. Applications include resource recovery from wastewater\, remediation of microplastics and other emerging pollutants\, anti-fouling surface coatings\, and new technologies for sustainable water treatment and desalination. She is passionate about science communications and K-12 STEM outreach\, and has served as a judge for the U.S. Nationals Stockholm Junior Water Prize since 2018. \nDerek Ho is a postdoctoral fellow with a B.S.\, M.S.\, and Ph.D. in Biological Systems Engineering from the University of Wisconsin–Madison\, where he also completed dual Ph.D. minors in Soil Science and Life Science Communication. He currently serves as a Visiting Research Professor at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University in the Department of Biogeochemistry\, where his research focuses on the occurrence\, transformation\, and detection of microplastics across diverse environmental matrices. Derek is deeply passionate about water security and is dedicated to developing technologies for identifying and remediating microplastics in the environment. \nRegister for this Seminar:\n\n\n \n \n Fall 2026 Webinar Registration\n \n \n Δ\n \n \n\n \n Name(Required)\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email(Required)\n \n OrganizationJoin our mailing list? SUMMARY:Penn-CHOP ECHO Update
DESCRIPTION:In this seminar\, Heather Burris\, MD\, MPH and Sunni Mumford\, PhD\, will present an update on the work of Penn and CHOP researchers in Cycle 2 of the Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Cohort. \nA multidisciplinary group of researchers from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and Penn Medicine received a $50 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2023 to study the impact of environmental influences on pregnancy and children’s health. The research program is part of the NIH’s Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Program\, which funds research to uncover how environmental exposures during preconception\, pregnancy and early life affect children’s long-term health. \nFollowing registration below\, a Zoom link will be emailed for the webinar. \nHeather Burris\, MD\, MPH is a founding member of Philadelphia Regional Center for Children’s Environmental Health. Heather is a practicing neonatologist at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania who focuses on environmental determinants of adverse pregnancy outcomes and the impact of exposures on health equity. \nShe studies: greenspace\, air pollution\, metals and other toxic chemicals\, and neighborhood deprivation and segregation. Heather’s research projects enroll study participants during pregnancy or use large datasets to identify beneficial exposures and harm reduction to guide perinatal environmental health policy. \nSunni Mumford\, PhD\, is the Professor of Epidemiology and Co-Director of the Women’s Health Clinical Research Center at the University of Pennsylvania. Sunni is a reproductive and nutritional epidemiologist whose research focuses on the role of modifiable lifestyle and environmental factors across the life course that affect female and male reproductive health\, fertility\, pregnancy and child health outcomes. She is particularly interested in the intersection between diet and environmental exposures during critical windows of development\, and epidemiologic methods to address these pressing questions. \nRegister for this Seminar:\n\n \n \n Fall 2026 Webinar Registration\n \n \n Δ\n \n \n\n \n Name(Required)\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email(Required)\n \n OrganizationJoin our mailing list?
