SUMMARY:Health Risks from Air Pollution: Costs of Relaxing Standards
DESCRIPTION:Professor Joel Schwartz is noted for his work on the acute and chronic health effects of fossil fuel air pollution. One of his collaborative studies revealed that exposure to fine combustion particles in the air at concentrations well below current standards are associated with a range of conditions\, including dementia\, asthma\, heart attacks\, and lung cancer. The study indicated that the death rate from this pollution is almost 1 in 5 deaths worldwide\, about twice the previous mortality estimate.  Research data has shown that the pollution impact falls disproportionately on poorer communities. \nSpeaker: Dr. Joel Schwartz\, Professor of Environmental Epidemiology at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health \nProfessor Schwartz has examined cardiovascular effects of lead exposure in adults\, as well as cognitive\, auditory and growth effects of lead exposure in children\, with gasoline lead as the major source of such exposure in the U.S. His research has examined both acute and chronic exposure effects\, including exposure to fine combustion particles in the air at concentrations well below current standards. Documented health effects ranged from intensified respiratory symptoms in patients\, to higher hospital admissions\, to increased deaths. This research led to the past tightening of the U.S. air quality standards. His work with other researchers on the health effects of ozone exposure has focussed on the cardiovascular effects of air pollution and on factors which modify the body’s response\, with some evidence that diabetics patients are more susceptible.

SUMMARY:5th Annual Margo Simon Golden Memorial Webinar: Environmental Justice and Women’s Health
DESCRIPTION:Dr. James-Todd is an environmental reproductive epidemiologist at Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the Director of the Environmental Reproductive Justice Lab. Her work focuses on the importance of pregnancy as a sensitive window of consumer product and environmental chemical exposures. She has been awarded the Estrellita and Yosuf Karsh Visiting Professorship in Women’s Health for her research in environmental reproductive health and has served on the EPA’s Scientific Advisory Board for the Chemical Assessment Advisory Committee\, two National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine’s committees and the March of Dimes Environmental Justice Working Group.

SUMMARY:Science Café: The Quest for Safer Products
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a dynamic conversation about how policies and industry practices influence our daily exposures to toxic chemicals in consumer products. You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at how advocates use science to inform decision-makers\, build coalitions\, and advance laws that protect communities. The discussion will spotlight opportunities to create strong\, science-based policies and drive broader systemic change\, paving the way for a safer world.

SUMMARY:CHE Café: How states can lead on environmental health
DESCRIPTION:The Collaborative for Health and the Environment present CHE Café: How states can lead on environmental health\, co-hosted with their partners at The New School. Many protections from pollution and toxic chemicals have moved from the federal level to the states in recent years. States have become laboratories of innovation\, with model environmental health policies found across the country. This webinar will feature Susan Kaplan\, author of the recently released book A Healthy Union: How States Can Lead on Environmental Health. The discussion will highlight leading state environmental health policies and what other states — and the federal government – can learn from them. RSVP here.

DESCRIPTION:During this webinar\, participants will review the following points: 1) what radon is\, 2) its health risk to children and staff in childcare facilities in Pennsylvania\, and 3) its prevalence in Pennsylvania. Additionally\, this webinar will provide an overview of how radon can cause lung cancer along with other risks to children who are exposed. Participants will also review how radon enters buildings\, and\, if/when radon is found\, the proper radon testing protocols\, devices to use for testing\, and remediation protocols for home- and center-based childcare. Lastly\, this webinar will share current radon policies\, regulations\, and guidance from other states on radon in childcare.
