SUMMARY:Healthy Communities Task Force Indoor Air Quality Meeting Series: Housing Quality and Health
DESCRIPTION:Join the HCTF for our first of three webinars on indoor air quality and health. The first webinar in the series will focus on residential indoor air quality\, exploring how our homes – from building materials to home maintenance to pests – affect indoor air quality and our health.\n\nIn this meeting\, Dr. Tyra Bryant-Stephens\, MD\, Medical Director of the Community Asthma Prevention Program (CAPP) and Chief Health Equity Officer of the Center for Health Equity at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia\, will present on her work to support children with Asthma in Philadelphia and beyond. She’ll discuss the services that CAPP community health workers provide to local families to mitigate asthma triggers in the home environment\, with the goal of improving asthma-related outcomes in children. Brandon Alcorn\, Director of Operations with Rebuilding Together Philadelphia\, will also join us to discuss the CAPP+Home Repairs Program program\, a partnership between CHOP and Rebuilding Together Philadelphia that works with the families of children in West and Southwest Philadelphia who are experiencing asthma to provide structural home repairs that will eliminate root causes of asthma triggers including roof repairs\, wall repairs\, plumbing repairs and pest extrusion procedures.\n\n*This event has been approved for 1 AICP CM credit*

SUMMARY:Air Quality\, Climate Change\, and Health
DESCRIPTION:Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission’s Healthy Communities Task Force (HCTF) is an information sharing and networking forum that brings together planners\, public health professionals\, and stakeholders in our communities with the goal of fostering healthier communities across Greater Philadelphia. Since its inception in 2014\, the HCTF has hosted meetings on a variety of topics\, including the intersections of health and climate change\, housing\, active transportation\, segregation\, racial equity\, and safety. \nThe Climate Change Forum (formerly the Climate Adaptation Forum) is an ongoing series of DVRPC-hosted workshops and webinars focusing on the intersection of climate change and city and regional planning. The series brings together professionals\, advocates\, and community members who are working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prepare the region for the impacts of climate change. Each event features one or more professionals presenting their work on specific climate change issues\, followed by a moderated discussion with participation from forum attendees. \nAir Quality\, Climate Change\, and Health is a joint meeting of the Climate Change Forum and the Healthy Communities Task Force. As the climate crisis continues to worsen\, mitigating and preventing health issues brought on by poor outdoor air quality is very important. The aim of this meeting is to learn from the challenges and successes of local leaders and researchers actively working on these issues\, as well as discuss strategies for communities to better prepare for the future. \nDr. Sheila Tripathy\, a Senior Research Scientist at Drexel University’s Dornsife School of Public Health and Dr. Joshua Stratton\, an Assistant Professor at Rider University\, will present on some of their recent community air monitoring work\, including projects in South and Southwest Philly and Trenton\, NJ.  We will also hear from Russell Zerbo\, an advocate with the Clean Air Council and Melissa Miles\, Executive Director of the New Jersey Environmental Justice Alliance. \nThis meeting will be held in-person at DVRPC’s offices (address and directions below).  We invite you to join us after the meeting for lunch and further conversation. \nDVRPC’s Main Conference Room\nThe ACP Building – 8th Floor\n190 N. Independence Mall West\nPhiladelphia\, PA\nwww.dvrpc.org/directions \nThis meeting offers 1.5 AICP CM credits. \nCM#9277009

SUMMARY:Minding the Climate: How Neuroscience Can Help Solve Our Environmental Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Duhaime has written Minding the Climate: How Neuroscience Can Help Solve Our Environmental Crisis. In her book\, Dr. Duhaime discusses how our decisions and understanding of complex problems like climate change are influenced by neuroscience and the evolution of our brains. Dr. Duhaime will present key points from the book\, followed by a moderated discussion of strategies about how to use these insights. \nThis discussion session will be moderated by PRCCEH Deputy Director Marilyn V. Howarth\, MD\, FCPP. Dr. Howarth is a College Fellow and chairs the Environmental Health Committee of the Section on Public Health and Preventive Medicine. She is faculty at the Center of Excellence in Environmental Toxicology at the Perelman School of Medicine. \nThe discussion will be followed by a question & answer session with those in attendance. After the discussion\, Dr. Duhaime will be available to sign copies of her book. \nAbout Dr. Duhaime\nDr. Duhaime is a senior pediatric neurosurgeon at the Massachusetts General Hospital and is the Nicholas T. Zervas Distinguished Professor of Neurosurgery at Harvard Medical School. Her neuroscience research investigates mechanisms\, pathophysiology\, imaging\, and treatment of injury in the immature brain\, using translational and clinical approaches to study injuries occurring in infants and young children\, including those seen most commonly in child abuse. The work also investigates plasticity\, recovery\, and return of brain function in children and adolescents during maturation. \nDr. Duhaime also has a longstanding interest in the relationship between brain and behavior\, and in environmental issues. She is a Faculty Associate of the Harvard University Center for the Environment. Beginning with a fellowship at the Radcliffe Institute in 2016 she has explored the neurobiology of reward circuitry and plasticity and its relevance to pro-environmental behavior\, and also worked with a diverse team to design a prototype advanced “green” biophilic pediatric hospital. Her book on this work\, Minding the Climate\, was published in 2022 (Harvard University Press). She now serves as Associate Director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Center for the Environment and Health\, supervising the Research pillar\, and as Associate Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Climate Change and Health
