SUMMARY:Navigating Pregnancy and Children's Health as our Climate Warms
DESCRIPTION:The summer of 2023 was Earth’s hottest since global records began in 1880 and projections for 2024 are for the trend to continue with temperatures to be among the 10 hottest summers on record. Climate change has been a driver of hotter summers. Extreme and consistent heat has health impacts on everyone\, but children and pregnant people have unique risks. \nThis webinar will delve into the physiological impact of heat on children and pregnant people\, focusing on particularly vulnerable populations. The presenters will also share some tips for keeping vulnerable populations and others safer on days that are dangerously hot. \n\nLearning Objectives\n\nIdentify the physiological impact of heat.\nState population vulnerabilities to heat related illness.\nDescribe three actions to reduce the health risks of heat.\n\n\nPresenters\nDaniel J. Smith\, PhD\, AGPCNP-BC\, CNE\, Assistant Professor\, Villanova University M. Louise Fitzpatrick College of Nursing is a doctorally prepared nurse practitioner and was a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Future of Nursing Scholar. His overarching research interest lies at the intersection of understanding the effects of climate change on the health outcomes of disenfranchised populations and how we can build climate resilience and adaptation skills in communities & health systems. He also has expertise on the environmental determinants of health and has been the academic lead for community-based participatory research projects examining the impact of the lead exposure of immigrant families in Philadelphia\, PA\, and heat exposure on migrant farmworker families in Southeastern Georgia. He continues to hold a clinical practice one day per week and is fluent in Spanish. \nKatie Huffling\, DNP\, RN\, CNM\, FAAN is a Certified Nurse-Midwife and the Executive Director of the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments (ANHE). With ANHE\, Dr. Huffling works with nurses and nursing organizations to elevate environmental health issues\, such as climate change\, toxic chemicals\, and sustainability in healthcare\, amongst the nursing profession. Dr. Huffling is a passionate supporter of nurse-led advocacy in support of healthier environments for all. \nDr. Huffling received her DNP in Health Innovation and Leadership from the University of Minnesota. She is an appointed member of the US Environmental Protection Agency Children’s Health Protection Advisory Council and is a member of the National Academy of Medicine’s Action Collaborative on Decarbonizing the U.S. Health Sector. She was a recipient of the 2018 Charlotte Brody Award which recognizes nurses who go beyond everyday nursing endeavors to proactively promote and protect environmental health. \n

SUMMARY:Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Program and Philadelphia
DESCRIPTION:Sunni Mumford is the Professor of Epidemiology and Co-Director of the Women’s Health Clinical Research Center at the University of Pennsylvania. Sunni is a reproductive and nutritional epidemiologist whose research focuses on the role of modifiable lifestyle and environmental factors across the life course that affect female and male reproductive health\, fertility\, pregnancy and child health outcomes. She is particularly interested in the intersection between diet and environmental exposures during critical windows of development\, and epidemiologic methods to address these pressing questions. \nA multidisciplinary group of researchers from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and Penn Medicine have received a $50 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to study the impact of environmental influences on pregnancy and children’s health. The research program is part of the NIH’s Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Program\, which funds research to uncover how environmental exposures during preconception\, pregnancy and early life affect children’s long-term health. \nZoom Meeting Link.  Meeting ID: 924 0066 1903\n  \nRegister Here\nWe’ll follow up with an ical appointment and send reminders! SUMMARY:National Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Education for Pediatricians
DESCRIPTION:Childhood lead exposure and poisoning is a sustained public health concern that affects half a million children in the United States. Consequences associated with lead exposure include decreased impulse control\, learning difficulties\, and conduct disorders. Pediatricians are in a unique position to offer anticipatory guidance\, identify and treat the condition\, educate\, and advocate for policies that protect children. This webinar will build awareness of and capacity for lead screening among pediatricians and pediatric and non‐physician clinicians. Specifically\, this webinar will address: pediatric lead exposure as a present‐day public health concern\, the importance of screening and testing\, and community level approaches to decreasing pediatric lead exposure. \n\nIncreased understanding of the importance of testing children for lead in the context of pediatric practice and that lead exposure is a priority public health concern.\nIncreased confidence and understanding of their role as clinicians in detecting lead exposure in patients and blood lead level testing.\nIncreased comprehension of the CDC’s Blood Level Reference Value and its utility.\nIncreased testing for lead in pediatric or other medical practices.\n\nPanelists: \n\nMaryKate Cardon\, DNP\, CPNP‐PC (Moderator)\nMateusz Karwowski\, MD\, MPH\nAlan Woolf\, MD\, MPH\, FAACT\, FAAP\, FACMT\nGredia Huerta‐Montañez\, MD\, FAAP\n\nThis Webinar is free of charge\, however prior registration is required.

SUMMARY:PFAS: Looking Foward: NASEM Recommendations to Improve Public Health
DESCRIPTION:The NASEM report’s recommendations that include public health surveillance\, as well as the critical need to educate health providers on environmental exposures and associated health effects will be discussed. \nDr. Laura Anderko is an environmental health nurse consultant and co-director of the Federal Region 3 Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit (PEHSU) of Mid-Atlantic Center for Children’s Health and the Environment at the M. Louise Fitzpatrick College of Nursing\, Villanova University. She has consulted with health providers and communities about potential health effects and risk reduction strategies for PFAS. She was a co-author for the recent National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) report\, Guidance on PFAS Exposure\, Testing\, and Clinical Follow-up (2022) \nECHO PFAS Series \nThis series is based on Project ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) strategies. It is an innovative tele-mentoring program designed to create virtual communities of learners by bringing together healthcare providers and subject matter experts using videoconference technology\, brief lecture presentations\, and case-based learning\, fostering an “all learn\, all teach” approach. \nParticipants are engaged in the bi-directional virtual knowledge network by sharing clinical challenges and learning from experts and peers. \nDuring an ECHO session\, participants present real (anonymized) cases to the specialists—and each other—for discussion and recommendations. Participants learn from one another\, as knowledge is tested and refined through a local lens. \nEach participant will earn one CE for attending each session. There is no cost for participating in any of the sessions.

SUMMARY:Climate Change\, Disruption\, and Health Equity
DESCRIPTION:As climate-related disasters\, such as floods\, droughts\, and extreme temperatures become more common\, humans are being exposed to unique combinations of health hazards and stressors\, which are often inequitably distributed across the population. A panel of experts will discuss how climate change and climate disasters impact health outcomes for different populations and exacerbates health inequities\, their impact on health systems\, and how we can better prepare for and mitigate the health impacts of a changing climate. \nCo-sponsored with the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy and part of Energy Week at Penn. \nSupported by the Charles C. Leighton\, MD Memorial Lecture Fund.
