SUMMARY:The Race to Research: Plastic\, Microplastics\, and Human Health
DESCRIPTION:Megan J. Wolff\, PhD\, MPH\, will deliver dynamic and in-depth lecture on what is known – and what is being researched – about the impacts of plastics on human health. Recent findings about the impacts of plastic on human health demonstrate that plastic pollution is not just a litter problem\, but a health one. As researchers follow the path of microplastics into the ecosystem and into us\, they are coming to understand the hazards that these chemical particles present to living tissue\, and they are raising alarms. Plastic is ubiquitous in our lives\, and there is little way for individuals to avoid exposure. But solutions do exist – and they are within our reach. Come learn about what they are\, and what you can do to bring them about. \n  \nRegister for this Seminar:\n\n\n\n\nAbout Megan \nMegan J. Wolff\, Ph.D.\, MPH is the executive director of P-SNAP\, a network of physicians and scientists who speak\, write\, and testify on plastics and human health. From 2022-2023\, she served on the Minderoo-Monaco Commission on Plastic and Human Health\, which compiled an authoritative report on the health effects of plastic. She was the Health Policy Director at Beyond Plastics from 2021-2024. Wolff is an adjunct faculty member at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University\, and offers an online class on plastics\, microplastics\, and human health. She is a frequent public speaker. \nDr. Wolff received her Masters and her Ph.D. in Public Health from Columbia University\, and her BA in English from Wesleyan University. She lives with her family in New Paltz\, New York.

SUMMARY:The Enduring Legacy of Lead Poisoning
DESCRIPTION:PRCCEH is proud to welcome Dr. Bruce Lanphear of Simon Fraser University to kick off the Fall 2024 seminar series.  This hybrid event is Friday\, September 13 at 10am Eastern. \nBruce Lanphear\, MD\, MPH\, a physician and professor at Simon Fraser University\, lives on Bowen Island\, British Columbia in the Salish Sea. Bruce led influential studies used by federal agencies around the world to set standards for harmful levels of lead in air\, paint\, water\, and house dust. His research convinced public health agencies that no safe level of lead could be identified. He has studied dozens of toxic chemicals and conducted over a dozen randomized controlled trials reducing exposures to lead paint\, tobacco smoke\, pesticides\, and airborne pollutants. Bruce and his brother\, Bob\, co-founded Little Things Matter to disseminate research on toxic chemicals. They produce videos showing how our health is inextricably linked with environmental influences with the goal of preventing disease. \n  \nRegister here for In-Person and Virtual Attendance

SUMMARY:Navigating Pregnancy and Children's Health as our Climate Warms
DESCRIPTION:The summer of 2023 was Earth’s hottest since global records began in 1880 and projections for 2024 are for the trend to continue with temperatures to be among the 10 hottest summers on record. Climate change has been a driver of hotter summers. Extreme and consistent heat has health impacts on everyone\, but children and pregnant people have unique risks. \nThis webinar will delve into the physiological impact of heat on children and pregnant people\, focusing on particularly vulnerable populations. The presenters will also share some tips for keeping vulnerable populations and others safer on days that are dangerously hot. \n\nLearning Objectives\n\nIdentify the physiological impact of heat.\nState population vulnerabilities to heat related illness.\nDescribe three actions to reduce the health risks of heat.\n\n\nPresenters\nDaniel J. Smith\, PhD\, AGPCNP-BC\, CNE\, Assistant Professor\, Villanova University M. Louise Fitzpatrick College of Nursing is a doctorally prepared nurse practitioner and was a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Future of Nursing Scholar. His overarching research interest lies at the intersection of understanding the effects of climate change on the health outcomes of disenfranchised populations and how we can build climate resilience and adaptation skills in communities & health systems. He also has expertise on the environmental determinants of health and has been the academic lead for community-based participatory research projects examining the impact of the lead exposure of immigrant families in Philadelphia\, PA\, and heat exposure on migrant farmworker families in Southeastern Georgia. He continues to hold a clinical practice one day per week and is fluent in Spanish. \nKatie Huffling\, DNP\, RN\, CNM\, FAAN is a Certified Nurse-Midwife and the Executive Director of the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments (ANHE). With ANHE\, Dr. Huffling works with nurses and nursing organizations to elevate environmental health issues\, such as climate change\, toxic chemicals\, and sustainability in healthcare\, amongst the nursing profession. Dr. Huffling is a passionate supporter of nurse-led advocacy in support of healthier environments for all. \nDr. Huffling received her DNP in Health Innovation and Leadership from the University of Minnesota. She is an appointed member of the US Environmental Protection Agency Children’s Health Protection Advisory Council and is a member of the National Academy of Medicine’s Action Collaborative on Decarbonizing the U.S. Health Sector. She was a recipient of the 2018 Charlotte Brody Award which recognizes nurses who go beyond everyday nursing endeavors to proactively promote and protect environmental health. \n
